MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– The West Virginia University baseball earned its third sweep in the last four weekends with a 13-4 victory over Baylor, Sunday afternoon at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers improve to 26-16 and 14-7 in the Big 12 while the Bears fall to 19-23 and 9-12 in conference play.
Junior Grant Hussey went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored. Sophom*ore Skylar King added two doubles and three RBI while sophom*ore Benjamin Lumsden drove in two on a pair of hits.
Junior Aidan Major earned his fourth win of the year with five strikeouts in 5.2 innings while allowing four runs. Sophom*ores Gavin Van Kempen and Maxx Yehl and graduate student Hambleton Oliver combined for 3.1 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits between the three of them.
After a scoreless first, the two teams traded two-run home runs in the second as Hussey hit his ninth of the season and the 34th of his career, just one shy of the WVU program record.
The Bears retook the lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth inning, but from that point, it was all West Virginia as the Mountaineers scored 11 unanswered runs.
In the bottom of the fifth, junior Kyle West ripped a run-scoring double off the wall before junior Brodie Kresser was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. A double play with the bases loaded then brought in the go-ahead run.
The Mountaineers added five runs in the seventh to break the game open. Lumsden had an RBI single before a bases-loaded hit by pitch to King and a walk to junior JJ Wetherholt forced in two additional runs. A fielder's choice and an error brought in two more to round out the scoring in the inning.
In the eighth, Lumsden and King both had RBI doubles to put the finishing touches on the day.
West Virginia will return to action on Tuesday against Pitt from PNC Park. The game will air on ESPN2 with first pitch set for 7 p.m.
