The racing surface is the synthetic material Tapeta Footings (a mixture of sand, rubber, fiber with a wax coating). It was the first synthetic horse racetrack longer than 1 mile (1.6 km) in the Northeast and the first racetrack paved with Tapeta in the United States.

Presque-isle (from the French presqu'île, meaning almost island) is a geographical term denoting a piece of land which is closer to being an island than most peninsulas because of its being joined to the mainland by an extremely narrow neck of land.

Presque Isle Bay is a natural bay located off the coast of Erie, Pennsylvania. Its 5.8-square-mile (15 km²) embayment is about 4.6 miles (7.4 km) in length, about 1.8 mi (2.9 km) across at its widest point, and an average depth of about 20 feet (6.1 m).

This park has it all: beaches/swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, bicycling, picknicking, lighthouses, monument/history, etc. There is literally something for everyone at Presque Isle. Entrance to the park is free, but they accept donations.

Located on 272 acres off I-90 in Summit Township on the site of the previously-failed Commodore Downs then Erie Downs, Presque Isle and opened in 2007 and was the first race track in America to install the synthetic Tapeta surface (a combination of rubber, sand, fiber & a wax coating).

But you have to know that there are only three major types of Track Surfaces: Turf, Dirt, and Artificial or Synthetic Tracks. Other terms like grass, tapeta, Polytrack, etc., are just synonyms or subtypes of these surfaces.

A Migrating Peninsula

As the glacier melted and retreated north, rocks, pebbles, and sand fell off, creating a ridge called a “moraine.” So much ice melted that the valley to the north of Erie became a lake. The waves of newly created Lake Erie deposited sand on the moraine and created Presque Isle.

The track surface is a mixture of sand (from the Sabine River) and clay, with a limestone base. The track has stabling for 1,200 horses. The Delta Downs grounds features horse pastures which are visible from the entrance. Draft and miniature horses and thoroughbreds are on display.

Synthetic surfaces allow racing to take place in bad weather conditions, when it may otherwise be cancelled, and for this reason are sometimes referred to as All Weather surfaces.
